Ceramic butter dish, 2 plates, 2 smoked wine glasses, ceramic fish cruet set, candle, 2 crackers, 2 knives, forks, spoons, William Morris ‘Strawberry Thief’ cotton tablecloth.
POA
A table set for Christmas lunch.
Made to pair & house a beautiful sculpture by Ellie Laycock: Lurpak Ingot 2023 (Series: Who Will Keep Us Warm And Safe? Cast solid bronze, unique object, signed on verso) the butter dish is decorated with the Crushing Aldi watercolour design. A nod to working class decor with a cruet set from a family holiday perhaps… 1970’s smoked wine glasses reference Mike Leigh’s classic play Abigails Party satirising the social aspirations of its host as her cocktail party descends into marital misery.
The unlit candle & un-pulled crackers sit aside empty plates asking for basic needs. Even the table cloth pattern is illustrated with William Morris’ ‘Strawberry Thief’ design to enhance the expanding desperation as the cost of living rises.

Toy wooden chair, gilded in fools gold, Aldi crush fabric
With a subtle reference to the James song sit down, specifically the verse:
Now I've swung back down again
And it's worse than it was before
If I hadn't seen such riches
I could live with being poor
The ridiculous vulgarity of displays of wealth is demonstrated with the contrasting themes of gilding alongside the Aldi logo fabric. Social media pressures people to attain money in order to show off their bad taste to others for no other purpose than to make others envious.

Art is so often used for PR purposes, or to promote gentrification - Artwashing is the practice of using art, artists, or cultural projects to beautify, legitimise, or distract from problematic actions, policies, or images, often by corporations, developers, or governments to mask issues like gentrification, environmental damage, or human rights abuses.
This work contains the bespoke Aldi design fabric created by the artist.

Ceramic butter dish ‘Disrupted Object’
Edition of 3
Inspired by Ellie Laycock’s Lurpack Ingot 2023 (Series: Who Will Keep Us Warm And Safe?) a cast solid bronze block of Lurpack butter (unique object) sparked recognition of my own experience with the rising prices of food. Butter was especially noticeable, with Lurpack RRP rising so much that some supermarkets resorted to placing it in security boxes. I had noticed steak with alarm stickers, my local Lidl doesn't allow you out of the checkout area without scanning a barcode from a receipt.

A sad message within a hopeful lyric in stark contrast to the over commercialised holiday season. The pressure to spend is overwhelming for many, with the basic necessities often hard to attain.

Hunting down some beautiful vintage Art Deco plates as decorative wall pieces to further the illusion of placing the 'fancy' watercolours into their design to give a heightened status to the places which have been a lifeline for so many. The quality of much of the wares for sale are 'surprisingly good' even 'winning awards'. I've overheard this many times by the middle classes justifying their purchases, when those of us who have always known, smile inwardly...
Food hierarchy has always been present in my own life, possibly moreso as I remember the pressure of the logo as a status symbol (luckily I was too busy clubbing in Manchester to care) that all ties into the culture of the time, which is fully explained in the now cult status Naomi Klein book NO LOGO. (And also touched upon in her incredible recent book Doppelganger) It prevails today.
From what trainers you wear to which supermarket you frequent everything comes with coded status. Choosing vintage plates. I wanted to also show something cozy, homely and comforting. This coupled with the obvious destruction of two logos which is still readable despite their wrinkled state display is how deeply embedded these things are in our subconscious. The psychology of this fascinates me as more and more people succumb to this pressure through culture/social media and then into their daily lives.

2023
Wood, paper, LED lights, carpet
Series: Anamnesis Unbroken (Au)
H: 67.5cm, W 61cm, D 37.5cm
Containing the crushed drawings from the project Loci literally houses the thoughts & memories of the artist. The dolls house represents the head & refers also to the concept of a mind palace, a safe place she can go inside her head as well as wander through its architecture. The one word title also means a particular position or place where something occurs or is situated. The drawings contained inside are a collection of traumatic events now located in one place.
When spoken the title can also be mistaken for Loki. Loki was regarded by the ancient Norse people as the god of mischief, trickery, and deception.
The contents of the dolls house are no longer present except for two clocks as a reminder that time is present but not linear. The mind recalls memories & trauma in different ways & never chronologically. LED lights twinkle with a cool light like synapses of the brain firing throughout the rooms.
Painted in bright flamingo pink, her camp side is also revealed & celebrated. Although the work focuses on trauma her presentation to the world is not without humour.

Zaftig borrows an informal American term for a full rounded figure. This term like many is only directed at women. Derogatory jabs towards women wear them down, encouraging body dysmorphia. Noble both celebrates & bites back with this work, turning negative attitudes around.

Calamus refers to the hollow lower part of the shaft of a feather or a quill. Obsessively drawing feathers she picked up from the age of 6, the Noble began her life long love of drawing from life. Quills bore equal fascination as early writing implements rendering feathers even more magical as a representation of escape through flight & literature. Two of her favourite things.

As with all her works, the title indicates a trauma without using triggering language. It has real light switches connects to a difficult memory involving a dolls house which was never completed or played with stored in an outhouse. The miniature Bakerlite light switches with tiny working lightbulbs offered comfort through the imaginings of a young mind.

T-bar reconnects several red objects including a leather purse, a beloved pair of T-bar Clarkes shoes & ballet shoes worn by Moira Shearer in the 1948 Powell & Pressburger film The Red Shoes. In the film the shoes are both a form of joy of dance & her undoing as a metaphor for the men who pull her in two directions through their own selfish obsessive love & need to possess her. Red shoes have also been used as a symbol solidarity with victims & survivors of domestic violence - a subject often explored by Noble. The ‘T’ also connects to hidden parts of the artists identity from early childhood - now buried - but not forgotten.

Avon returns to themes of perfume made by the cosmetics company in the shape of different objects. In this case an old fashioned telephone which also connects to the place she lived & a connection to a telephone at the bottom of the stairs near the front door. This door was never used by anyone living there, or those who knew its residents. The notion of behind closed doors where things are unseen reverberate when contained in a glass dome.
